Soccer Drills - Under 17

Bring your players to the next stage of their development

Nothing is more exciting than helping your players to get ready for the next level. At the under 17 level your football players will most likely have developed some of their most fundamental skills. They are starting to work more on their individual strengths and weaknesses that make them the football players that they are. Your job as a coach is it, to develop these young talents. Help them get to the next level, so they can perform successfully at the under 19 level.

Shooting Drill – Precision from distance

Set Up:

Place two big goals next to eachother, with a distance of at least 15m in between. Two poles on each goal line divide the goal in thirds. Put another pole 25m in front of the two goals. 3 cones, behind the pole, mark the shooting area (see drawing). The players will then line up at station 1 and 2.

Execution:

The first player of each station starts dribbling towards the pole at the same time, after the coach has given the start signal. Both players try to get around the pole as tight as possible (Consider the player coming from the other side). As soon as the players have passed the pole, the coach will give a signal on where to shoot the ball. The goal shot must take place inside the shooting area. S1 will use the right foot and S2 the left.

Cross Competition – Score a Volley Goal

Set Up:

Two big goals will be set up opposite eachother on a 30m x 40m pitch. The halfway line and corners will be marked with cones. Divide the group into two team (5 Field players + 1 Goalkeeper in the example). 3 field players of each team, will line up inside the field in front of the opposite team’s goalkeeper. The other two players of each team, will line up on the sideline / wing position with a lot of soccer balls.

Execution:

The two wing players of each team will get the numbers one and two. The coach will signal which player plays the cross pass to the players in front of the goal. The three players should convert the cross pass into a goal shot with just one touch. They are allowed to use their head and feet. In the same manner they are allowed to pass the ball to their teammate with one touch, but for just one time. The goalkeeper needs to keep good positioning to either catch or save the ball.Cross pass competition: Which team scores more goals within 3 minutes?

3 vs 3 – A Transition Game

Set Up:

Two goals need to be set up with poles (Width 7m) on a 15m x 20m field. Divide the group into teams of three and sent two teams to each field. One of the two teams will get the ball in the middle of the field.

Execution:

The teams will play a “3 on 3” match on each field. The teams need to dribble across the goalline, in order the score a goal – Both goals can be attacked by each team! The attacking team needs to establish a fast passing and good transition game to create open spaces and make use of the circumstances that two goals can be attacked. Note that there should be a time limit of 30 seconds to each attack. If time expires, the ball is lost or the team scores a goal, the other team will kick off the ball in the middle of the field to start their attack. Playing time: 3 x 3 minutes

Through Pass - 3+2 versus 3

Set Up:

Divide a field of approx. 25m x 15m into three zones of each 25m x 5m. Divide players into groups of 5 (blue team) and 3 players (orange team). The blue team has three players in one endzone and two in the other. The orange team has all three players in the middle zone as defenders. The group of three blue players has the ball prior to the start of the exercise.

Execution:

The blue team tries to consistently pass the ball from one endzone to the other, without the defenders gaining possession of the ball. 5 successful passes (from one side to the other) equal a point for the blue team. Gaining possession of the ball equals a point for the defending team. Play until 7 points, then put in new defenders.

This exercise aims to improve your team's through passes. Players have to constantly try to get open behind the defenders before being able to receive a pass. The ball possessing group of players has to maintain a quick and wide passing game, to create gaps in the defensive scheme.

Without passing and dribbling there is no scoring

Scoring and winning is the ultimate goal of any football game. Whether a volley shot, bicycle kick, header or instep drive. Any technique can be improved by practicing it during your soccer training sessions. However, without an effective passing game or a perfect dribbling, there would not even be a chance to score. Therefore, coaches should always combine several skills in their session plans. Shots on the goal are perfect for engaging in small-field games or passing drills.
