The Wild Wild West - Game for youth players
Set Up:
Set up 3 stations, with each one goal in front. Divide the team into several groups – groups should be equally good.
Station 1: Starting cone: 6 coordination rings, one ball per player 5m in front of rings and a mini goal 10m in front of the balls
Station 2: like station 1, instead of rings – 4 small hurdles and a big goal
Station 3: like station 1, instead of rings – 4 poles
Execution:
The kids have to get over, around and passes several obstacles before they have to prove that they are good shooters – just like in the wild wild west! The groups line up at the starting cone of the respective station. After the coach’s starting signal the first players runs through the first obstacles and shoots the first ball on the respective goal. Afterwards player runs back to the starting cone and “high fives” the next player in line, which immediately starts running As soon as all players are done with station 1, they move on to station 2, then to station 3. Competition: Goals on mini goals: 2 scores, Goals on big goal: 1 score – If the score is tied, the first team to finish the course wins! Who are your best strikers?
Medicine Ball – Pass Competition
Set Up:
This exercises requires a 20m x 15m field, which you mark down with cones. In the middle of this field you should place 5-7 medicine balls into a neutral zone. The neutral zone covers an area of 3m to both sides. Mark down the neutral area with cones as well. Divide the group into two teams – Each player should get a ball. Place additional balls close to the teams.
Execution:
As soon as the coach has given the start signal, the players will target the medicine balls in the middle of the field. The goal is to move the balls out of the neutral zone inside the opposing team’s zone (behind the cone line). Strong and precise shooting is required. Each ball that crosses the opponents line, will count as a point for the team. Decision making as well as orientation skills are demanded – Players will get to the point where they have to decide whether they should go for a score or rather focus on preventing the opponents from scoring? Playing time: 2 minutes – Which team reaches the highscore?
ELEVATE YOUR GAME
1 vs 1 – On pole goal
Set Up:
For this exercise you need to set up two pole goals (Width 10m) on a 20m x 15m field. Divide the group into groups of two (1 versus 1) – a maximum of 5 groups per field is advised. One player of each group will be assigned to the first team (Orange) and the other player to the second team (Blue). Each pair of players needs a ball.
Execution:
Each pair is playig an open field “1 on 1”. The oppsoing goal can be attacked over the entire width – the ball has to be dribbled across the goal line. However there is a time limit of 20 seconds to a single attack. After scoring a goal, losing the ball or expiration of the time, the attack is over. The defensive players will turn into offensive, as soon as all 5 attacking players are done. Several pairs can play at the same time, which will improve players orientation on the pitch. Playing Time: Start a team competition! – Which team is leading after 5 rounds, orange or blue?
The Juke Square - Warm-Up
Set Up:
Set up a small (grey) & big (orange) cone square. 6-8 players per set up. Both blue players in front have one ball each.
Execution:
The blue players with the ball start the exercise by dribbling towards the middle. They perform a juke move in front of the cone to the given direction (to the right, in the example). After the juke move they accelerate for one step and pass the ball to the next player. Now it’s the next players turn – The passing player lines up at the cone, to where he passed the ball before.

Scoring and winning is the ultimate goal of any football game. Whether a volley shot, bicycle kick, header or instep drive. Any technique can be improved by practicing it during your soccer training sessions. However, without an effective passing game or a perfect dribbling, there would not even be a chance to score. Therefore, coaches should always combine several skills in their session plans. Shots on the goal are perfect for engaging in small-field games or passing drills. To make sure that your next session plan is created even faster, there are a lot of other drill examples and variations on our other exercise pages.
